Associate Producer, Science Podcast at Vox Media

As the leading independent modern media company, Vox Media ignites conversations and influences culture. Across digital, podcasts, TV, streaming, live events, and print, we tell stories that affect our audience’s daily lives and entertain as much as they inform.

Vox Media, one of the fastest growing purveyors of top-notch podcasts, is looking for a talented associate producer to join a new weekly science show.

The show will focus on the holes in our scientific knowledge. Working with the Vox Science team, we’ll look at how scientists come up with new, unexpected questions and the mind-bending ways they try to answer them. We’ll give listeners a sense of awe for the unknown, and a sense of optimism for a future in which these questions might be answered.

A pilot for the show ran on the Today, Explained feed in November. You can listen here to get a basic feel for what we’re going for: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1rZEhEBzlkh3O22vE7Jtx5 .

We’re looking for someone who believes in creating audio magic and isn’t afraid to experiment with form and style. While you should have a firm basis in producing clear and excellent audio, we’re looking for candidates with the creativity and drive to make something completely new and different.. and kind of weird.

What you’ll do:

The associate producer will pitch episode topics and assist an episode’s lead producer in booking guests, pulling clips, assembling segments, and fact checking episodes. The right person for this position is delighted by the idea of innovating on foundational news formats like the standard two-way, and wants to try to approach stories in unexpected ways.

This is a role where you should expect to grow, to lead full episodes and report segments down the line.

You should want to tell wild stories that end up in strange places. Most importantly, you should be more interested in questions than answers. A curious mind and reverence for explanatory journalism are non-negotiable must-have qualities.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a team to launch and produce a new explanatory science podcast
  • Research and propose timely and distinctive story segments
  • Assemble prep for the host and write program copy
  • Fact check episodes
  • Pull clips and assist other producers as needed
  • Locate and book diverse sources and guests
  • Experiment with new content and concepts as we expand the limits of what explanatory podcasts can be
  • Ensure show meet Vox’s high journalistic and creative standards

What you’ll bring:

  • A curious mind and openness to experimentation
  • An interest in (and love for) all the joys of science!
  • A demonstrated ear for great tape and inventive approaches to audio storytelling
  • A highly organized and dogged approach to landing bookings on a fast turnaround
  • A track record of developing stories that draw on diverse perspectives/source lists
  • Proficiency in audio editing in Pro Tools or another comparable program (we work in Pro Tools and can help facilitate a switch from Audition, Logic, or another program)
  • Interest in explanatory journalism, big ideas, and driving understanding
  • Creativity and a desire to push the boundaries and be innovative

Vox values thinkers, creatives, and obsessives from all backgrounds. We are looking to hire the right person — not the right résumé. We encourage those with diverse and nontraditional experience to apply.
