The Opportunity

Torch is looking for a Quality Engineering Lead. This team specializes in functional, system, automation, load, and performance testing at scale for performant mobile and web applications and backend services. We are looking for a passionate and influential leader who can manage diverse, smart, and motivated engineers to rapidly deliver high quality products.

The right person has recent hands-on “in the trenches” experience developing technical solutions, demonstrates a strong sense of collaboration in their work and professional relationships, clearly and thoughtfully communicates in their areas of expertise, empathizes with and advocates for the needs of customers, and loves mentoring others in their technical and professional development. If you are someone who effectively moves between high-level concepts and low-level execution, then this is a great role for you!

This position will start out being mostly hands-on (80%) as we establish the new QE practice within Torch. As further team members are brought on, it is expected that the role will settle in at about 50% hands-on time with the other 50% for management and collaboration.


  • Build the tools, processes, and team to deliver software of exceptional quality
  • Bootstrap your teams work and influence by example via your own technical contributions
  • Work with engineering and product managers to define and execute a long term quality strategy
  • Manage and grow a motivated, engaged, and effective team
  • Play an ongoing role in hiring activities for on-site and remote teams
  • Act to resolve issues that prevent the team from working effectively
  • Promote continuous development and improvement within your team and broader engineering organization
  • Implement ongoing quality improvement processes by working with cross-functional teams
  • Become a contributor to various technology communities and meetups


  • Proven ability in Quality Engineering
  • Professional experience managing, guiding, and mentoring a team of engineers
  • Professional experience writing QA software and tests
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience interpreting quality and product metrics
  • Experience with a distributed team is a plus
  • Comfortable with several database technologies such as SQL, RDBMS & NoSQL
  • Familiarity with programming concepts. Server-side programming skills with a modern language, preferably Ruby on Rails and Python -Java, or C# are a plus but not required
  • Experience working on the Linux command line a plus
  • Experience with Jenkins, CircleCI, and other CI platforms
  • Experience with pytest, pytest-html reporting or similar technologies
  • Experience with writing and debugging headless Selenium tests, Datadog Synthetics, Python, Python’s “requests”, mock, flaky, Browsermob Proxy.
  • Familiarity with logging tools such as Datadog, APM, Sentry, CloudWatch, and LogRocket
  • Understanding of REST APIs
  • General understanding of information security topics as well as secure coding practices
  • A degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, a related STEM field or equivalent professional experience
  • Desire to work cross-functionally within a growing startup
  • Possesses a professional services mindset
  • A curious self-starter
